And so it was … back in 2010, a call came through from BBC2’s Great British Menu to say Kenny has won a place in Series Four final and would we like to attend an event at the Bath Assembly Rooms where he, Lisa Allen, Tom Kerridge and Niall McKenna would “cook a banquet fit for a [future] King”.  We’d been glued to this series of Great British Menu. It was, more than ever all about celebrating local food and unlike previous series, where chefs were given the chance to showcase their own suppliers, this time around the contestants were tasked with sourcing their ingredients from a National Trust property in their region. All of the competing Chefs had to scour the farms, estates and surrounding neighbourhoods of a nearby historic property to unearth the very finest produce, celebrating Britain’s home-grown food. Enter stage left…. Borderfields.

Every Chef created a four-course menu to win the chance to cook for Prince Charles (president of the National Trust) and the Duchess of Cornwall, together with some of the nation’s best food producers, farmers and fishermen, at the final banquet. After two months of battling it out in regional and national heats, Lisa, Kenny, Tom and Niall were chosen by judges Matthew Fort, Prue Leith and Oliver Peyton to cook the banquet, which was held at the National Trust’s Assembly Rooms in Bath. To say it was a spectacular evening would be some understatement. Imagine having dinner cooked for you by just one of those Chefs and you start to get a feel for it!

And since then we have never looked back, working with Kenny and his team firstly at Rockliffe Hall and for the last 18 months at House of Tides. He has created an array of wonderful recipes using our oils, check out just a few of them on the website and he uses Borderfields all the time at House of Tides for a number of dishes. Having seen the restaurant from the bare bones pre-opening to the finished article later last year we feel privileged to have seen this wonderful work-in-progress first hand. The cherry on top had to be finding out on Wednesday that this Newcastle Quayside establishment has been awarded a Michelin Star. It felt like it should be and we certainly believed it was going to happen … hard work and dedication has culminated in the ultimate reward! Well done to a wonderful Chef and all of those around him who have worked so hard for it.
