Preparing yourself for any kind of exercise is always a challenge but when it’s a half marathon it’s particularly important to fuel yourself correctly in order to get the most out of your body. With the Great North Run taking place this weekend many will be wondering what the best foods are to fuel up on ahead of the big day. Do not fear, here at Borderfields we have a few suggestions which will help power you through!

During the lead up to the big day make sure to fuel your legs with high energy foods. Oily fish, like salmon and mackerel, are great sources of protein, essential fats, vitamin B and D. Head on over to our recipe page and check out Kenny Atkinson’s fried North East Coast Mackerel with beetroot jelly and orange vinagrette. After months of intense training it’s essential to maintain those levels of vitamin D, otherwise you’ll fall victim to muscle fatigue and lack of energy.

Fuelling up on good fats is also really important to give you energy. Borderfields cold press rapeseed oil has a near perfect blend of omegas 3, 6 and 9 so add a drizzle of this to some sautéed potatoes to give you the energy you need to cross that finishing line.

Finally, for a brilliant breakfast to spur you on look no further than Kenny Atkinson’s Scotch Pancakes with summer berries, maple syrup and Greek yoghurt. Follow the recipe using Borderfields Rapeseed Oil, flour, sugar and eggs, and you have yourself a winning formula.

Come first this year with a little help from us and make sure to bag yourself gold!
